How we test
A ranking is only as good as the work that goes into it. Here is exactly what happens between "that looks interesting" and a product sitting at number one.
1. The shortlist
We start broad. Best sellers at the big UK retailers, brands that are growing quickly, models that keep cropping up on forums and the ones you ask us about by email. That usually gives us 12 to 20 candidates.
Then we narrow it down. Anything with a pattern of safety complaints, suspicious-looking reviews or no proper customer service is out before we spend a penny.
2. We buy at the shelf price
Every test unit is bought with our own money from ordinary shops, at normal prices, delivered like any other order. That way we see what you see: the packaging, the delivery time, the manual that makes sense or doesn't.
3. Weeks of everyday use
Our testers live with the products in their own homes and flats. The hoover does the Sunday tidy-up after a birthday party. The pillow gets a heatwave. The travel bag gets overhead lockers and a rainy station platform.
Most tests run for three to six weeks. Anything with batteries, filters or fabrics that wear gets longer, because that is where cheap products give up.
4. Measured, not guessed
Every category has its own scoring sheet, written before testing begins. A few examples:
| Category | What we measure |
|---|---|
| Cleaning devices | Pickup on 4 surfaces, run time, noise in dB, how long emptying takes |
| Cooling and heating | Temperature change in °C over 30 minutes, power draw in watts, noise on the night setting |
| Sleep | Surface temperature in °C after 1 hour, shape after 30 nights, how well it washes |
| Wellness devices | Ease of daily use, comfort over 20 minutes, battery, cleaning |
| Tech accessories | Claimed battery life against real life, connection drops, build quality after knocks and scratches |
5. We read what other buyers say
A few weeks can't reveal everything. So we read verified customer reviews in bulk, focusing on the 1 and 2 star ones written after months of use. If lots of people report the same fault, it counts against the score even if our unit held up.
6. The score
Each criterion has a weighting, the weightings add up to 100 and the total becomes the score out of 10 you see on every pick. Value for money is always included. A product that is 5% better and costs twice as much rarely wins.
7. Revisits
Rankings show a "last updated" date. We review each list every few months, and sooner when a new model launches, a price changes a lot or readers tell us something has gone wrong.
Spotted something we missed? Let us know. Reader reports have sent more than one product back to the bench.
