How we test
A ranking is only as good as the work behind it. Here is exactly what happens between "this looks interesting" and a product sitting at number one.
1. The shortlist
We start wide. Best sellers in the big stores, brands that are growing fast, models that keep showing up in forums and the ones you ask us about by email. That usually gives us 12 to 20 candidates.
Then we cut. Anything with a pattern of safety complaints, fake-looking reviews or no real customer support is out before we spend a cent.
2. We buy at retail
Every test unit is bought with our own money from normal stores, at normal prices, shipped like any other order. That way we see what you see: the packaging, the delivery time, the manual that makes sense or doesn't.
3. Weeks of real use
Our testers live with the products in their own homes. The vacuum does the Sunday clean after a birthday party. The pillow gets a heatwave. The travel bag gets overhead lockers and a rainy platform.
Most tests run three to six weeks. Things with batteries, filters or fabrics that wear run longer, because that is where cheap products give up.
4. Measured, not guessed
Every category has its own scoring sheet written before testing starts. A few examples:
| Category | What we measure |
|---|---|
| Cleaning devices | Pickup on 4 surfaces, run time, noise in dB, how long emptying takes |
| Cooling and heating | Temperature change over 30 minutes, power draw, noise at night setting |
| Sleep | Surface temperature after 1 hour, shape after 30 nights, washability |
| Wellness devices | Ease of daily use, comfort over 20 minutes, battery, cleaning |
| Tech accessories | Battery claims vs real life, connection drops, build after drops and scratches |
5. We read the crowd
A few weeks can't show everything. So we read verified buyer reviews in bulk, focusing on the 1 and 2 star ones written after months of use. If lots of people report the same failure, it counts against the score even if our unit survived.
6. The score
Each criterion gets a weight, the weights add up to 100 and the total becomes the score out of 10 you see on every pick. Value for money is always part of it. A product that is 5% better and costs twice as much rarely wins.
7. Revisits
Rankings carry a "last updated" date. We check each list every few months, and sooner when a new model comes out, a price changes a lot or readers tell us something went wrong.
Spotted something we missed? Tell us. Reader reports have sent more than one product back to the bench.
